Lose Weight Your Way with Healthier Snacks

This past week I had the joy of going to my home town in Michigan as a nice little Thanksgiving holiday.  It was a great break from all the goings on here in Alabama.  I enjoyed every minute of it, and as with all vacations, I wish it was longer.  Alas, I am home and rejuvenated so that I can get back to helping all of you reach all of your weight loss goals, even through the holidays.

Now that I am back, I want to share with you a great way for having healthier travels.  In today’s feature article I am going to do just that.  I am going to share with you what you can add on your next family vacation to help you stay on track with your own healthy living goals.

I was getting prepared for a vacation, a road trip to Michigan, actually.  We live in Alabama so this is quite a long trip.  It only took about 13 hours of driving though.  As I part of the preparation we planned what we wanted to take for clothing, when we wanted to leave, when we wanted to return, where we were going to stay, what we were going to do once we got there, and we planned what we were going to eat.

We had decided that we were not going to eat fast food on the way.  This was because of many reasons; just to name a few, we have a child and a dog that went with us, it is less time if we didn’t have to wait in line, and we just knew that the fast food would not sit well in our stomachs during the drive.  On top of that, fast food is not really our main choice of food as we love home cooked meals.

I know many of you will be traveling in the next few weeks as well so I wanted to share with all of you what I decided to take with us.  This list will help you plan for your own trip whether you use all of it, pick and choose or adjust to your own needs.

We were able to get this into a mid-size cooler:

  • a loaf of our favorite 100% whole grain breadhealthy snacks
  • a package of oven roasted turkey breast
  • a small package of cheese
  • three boxes of our favorite granola bars – I personally love the Kashi  and Van brands (I try to buy bars with whole fruits)
  • a box of oatmeal/breakfast bars to help us stay a little more full

In a separate container we made our own trail mix:

  • almonds
  • dried cranberries
  • dried cherries
  • yogurt covered cherries
  • yogurt covered cranberries
  • black bean crunchies
  • chocolate covered pretzels

We also stopped at gas stations along the way to fill with gas and purchase bottles of water.  You can pack your own water if that is better for you.  My boyfriend likes his extra cold, so it has to be from a store because the ice packs do not keep it cold enough.

Use these food ideas for your next trip to help you enjoy a healthier vacation.

As a side note, if you are traveling by plane or train you can still pack some bars and trail mix in smaller containers or baggies.
