Do you feel as though you are starving when you try to eat healthier, or when you try to limit your food intake?
If you answered yes, then you are among the many who claim they cannot eat a weight loss diet because it leaves them feeling hungry.
This is definitely a topic for another day, but I want you to stop thinking of a “diet” as a bad word. Rather, simply think of it as the types and varieties of foods you eat.
You do not want to be “on a diet,” you want to be “eating a healthy diet.” Read Create a “Healthy Eating Habit” rather than “Go on a Diet” for more about why I feel so strongly about this change.
Now that is out of the way, the number one thing you can do to stop starving on your diet is to eat more fiber.
You may have heard this over and over, but has it really sunk in?
There are many reasons that you may not have increased your fiber intake yet; let me share with you a bit about why you really need to do this.
It is important that you consume about 30 grams of fiber each day – from whole foods and not supplements. There have actually been studies done that show those who do consume more fiber while losing weight have more success than those who don’t.
The fiber from whole foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains have several impacts on the health of your body.
- One, it keeps your digestive tract functioning properly.
- Two, fiber actually helps you feel full longer. Who doesn’t want to be able to feel full after their meals without needed to run to the cupboard within the next hour?
Keeping your body full will help prevent all that extra munching on junk food. Most of your unwanted calories will come from junk food because your body cannot process half the garbage in it, nor can it expend all those unnecessary calories.
One of the best things you can do to control your eating habits is to ensure you are including plenty of fiber in your daily meals.
