When we are short on time, want to get out of the house, or have a family outing the easiest meal is one at a restaurant. This does not just apply to the grab and go fast food; I’m talking about any restaurant.
Let’s face it, most of our lives revolve around food. Society has created a gateway to eating more food. This cycle can be especially hard to stop when you have built a habit of overeating.
The great news is that you can enjoy eating out, even when you want to lose weight. The trick is to have helpful tools and strategies in your “restaurant belt.”
Have you ever noticed that there is so much food on your plate when it is served to you?
Whether you are out to lunch with a client or your family, the meals at restaurants are huge. Even when you try to eat healthier by ordering that salad or grilled chicken instead of the multitude of other entrées that you could have chosen.
There was a tip that I read and heard people tell me over and over when I started my weight loss journey, that I did not give much merit. However, once I started using the tip it became so much easier, plus I began eating less.
That tip was to get it to go.
No matter what you order, ask for a to go box with the meal. Most people wait until the end to see if there is a need for one.
If you ask for one at the beginning, you can put half your meal into it right away.
Once you do, two things happen.
- You eat less because you no longer have a huge serving. Here’s a fun fact – did you know that serving sizes have tripled in size over the last 100 years?
- You have a prepared meal for the next day’s lunch (or supper that night). It may not be the healthiest choice, but it is only half the normal size and it will be an easy meal.
You do not have to avoid restaurants. You simply need to learn a few tricks to use when you do dine out. Here are a few more tips you can use when dining out:
- Try to find the menu online and plan ahead
- Avoid foods that say creamy or fried
- Allow yourself to enjoy the food, eating out is never the healthiest option, unless you are at a health specific restaurant
- Get picky when you order and make sure it is made the way you want it
- Order extra vegetables
- Replace fries or chips with vegetables
Using these tips you will be able to enjoy your next dining out experience without worrying about blowing your weight loss success.
